Batteryless Shake Flashlight:

lighting source for outdoor activities

Batteryless shake flashlight - handy and portable

For all outdoor activities such as trekking and hiking which involve over-night stays, always include a portable light source.  It should preferably be a waterproof flashlight.  Remember to bring lots of spare batteries.

If you do not want to incur the extra battery expenses, get a maintenance free, batteryless shake flashlight that requires no battery for power.  When you are outdoor, nothing is more frustrating than the inability to find your way around the strange surroundings in the dark.

Night Trekking Using Batteryless Shake Flashlight

To ensure a comfortable and safe night trekking and hiking experience for all concerned, it is imperative that every member of your team be briefed on the do's and don'ts while moving about as night falls, especially in the use of white LED flashlights.  You do not want to be zapped with a super bright white light and be momentarily blinded at the most critical time.

From experience, we know that bright white light will cause momentary blindness in us. This happens because when suddenly exposed to bright white light, the muscles around our pupils will relax to reduce the amount of light entering our eyes, thereby shutting out the glare.  The Eternity batteryless shake flashlight, with its softer light, will not cause serious temporary blindness.

Night Trekking Lighting Tips and Flashlights

Therefore, in order to see better in darkness, our pupils should be fully dilated to collect maximum amount of light available. Allow about 45 minutes for our eyes to adapt to the surrounding darkness.

If not using a shake flashlight but other flashlights which allow focusing of the light, in order to ensure continuous night visibility, use a broad beam with soft and diffused light as far as possible. Refrain from focusing the light into a bright spot.

Headlamps vs. hand-held batteryless shake flashlight

While headlamps mounted on the head is useful for walking trails at night as compared to a hand-held batteryless flashlight, however, the jerky beams cast by them in tandem with our head movements make them unsuitable for trekking. The unsteady beam will confuse and cause discomfort to other members of your team. For trekking, I prefer to mount the head lamp at waist level..

Alternatively, a hand-held batteryless shake flashlight allows more flexibility and better control of the beam. However, always remember to keep the beam at below waist level to avoid shining directly at your team members and blinding them for quite some time.

To prevent eyes fatigue, it is advisable to have frequent rest stops with all lights switched off.

Remember, always bring along a reliable and portable light source that is always ready, any time, any where and whenever light is wanted.
