No Battery Shake Flashlight As A Show And Tell Item

No Battery Shake Flashlight is an attention-grabbing show and tell item and an effective science teaching aid.

Science Teaching Ideas

The following is just a sample of ideas for the teaching of science.  Use it as a brainstorming tool.

  • Begin by asking the class if a flashlight can function without any batteries. Then show and tell the class that the no battery shake flashlight can generate its own power by merely shaking it. Ask the class for alternative methods of generating electricity.

  • Explain the Principle of Electromagnetic Induction and the Law of Conservation of Energy and how they are applied to the batteryless shake flashlight.

  • Explain how the shake flashlight converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

  • Highlight the environmental concerns over the disposal of expired batteries.

Learning Activity Using A Show And Tell Item -

No Battery Shake Flashlight as a Learning Tool

Besides showing and telling the class about the shake flashlight, try to explain the Principle of Electromagnetic Induction by carrying out a simple experiment.

Start by making a coil by wrapping a paper cylinder with copper wire.  Then connect the coil to a galvanometer.  Move a strong magnet back and forth inside the cylinder rapidly.

The galvanometer needle moves in tandem with the magnet indicating that a current is induced in the coil.  Note what type of current is produced.  Note what happens when the magnet stops (the needle returns to zero indicating the absence of any current).

This shows that a changing magnetic field is required for electromagnetic induction to take place. Tell this to the class.
